Blessings for fasting on the day of Muharram

On the 10th of Muharram Musa (aws) and the believers were saved by Allah (ST). When they were being followed to be killed by Phiraon and the enemies of Allah, Allah drowned them and saved Musa (aws) and the believers. Our Prophet (saws) realized the importance of that day, as we all believe in ALL the prophets of Allah, and made it compulsory for all Muslims to fast on that day as well.

When the month of Ramadan was revealed to our Prophet (saws), it was made compulsory on all muslims and the fasting on the 10th of Muharram was made optional, to the point that it was even abandoned by many.  Also, one must note that no mention is ever made of doing any additional acts other than fasting on this day. Many have the impression that this day entails the making of sweets grain products and giving it to neighbors or sending gifts to one another or having festivities that go beyond the normal daily activity. One should not assume that additional acts are required on this day of Ashura or this can turn to an act of adding to the religion, which becomes Bid'ah and punishable for the mere fact of adding to the religion that Allah has already completed and perfected for us.

Fasting is a reward in itself and we should observe fasts for the love of Allah and for His mercy on us. Although not a compulsory fast, those wishing to fast on the 10th of Muharram or any additional days, like all fasts, it carries blessings from Allah and good deeds are rewarded 10 times.    The best fast, however is the fast of Prophet David (aws) who fasted every other day (except for the 2 Eid days - Bukhari, Vol 3, Book 31, No 215; note: just fasting on Fridays is also not allowed unless you fast the day before or after with it- Bukhari, Vol 3, Book 31, No. 205). If that is not possible then our Prophet (saws) prescribed fasting a few days and skipping a few days. If one wanted to do more, then one should fast 3 days out of every month which carries the reward of fasting the WHOLE year.   There is no real mention of fasting on Monday's (which was our  Prophet's birthday, death day and the day he was given the prophethood) nor on Thursdays in Bukhari but there are a few in Sahih Muslim that we could look into (I mention one below).

Remember that fasting in the month of Ramadan and doing the daily prayers holds more rewards and benefits than just fasting on a few of the optional days out of the year.

In conclusion, one can fast on the 10th of  Muharram and they will Inshallah be rewarded but they do not have to. This year the 10th of Muharram falls on a Friday (Jan 18, 2008) so try to fast the day before or the day after as well. And, even better,  on the 10th, 11th and the 13th of Muharram for the full blessings of fasting of Ashura, fasting of 3 days of the month and fasting on a Monday.

And Allah knows best.

Quran: Sura Bakarah - continued

(Arabic/Transliteration/Meaning Ref: http://www.muslimaccess.com/quraan/arabic/002.asp)

Allah invites mankind to accept the Guidance voluntarily and to submit to Him, the Lord and the Creator of the Universe and to believe in the Quran, His Guidance, and in the Life-after-death. 21 - 29

2:21

O ye people! Adore your Guardian-Lord, who created you and those who came before you, that ye may have the chance to learn righteousness;

Ya ayyuha alnnasuoAAbudoo rabbakumu allathee khalaqakum waallatheenamin qablikum laAAallakum tattaqoona

2:22

Who has made the earth your couch, and the heavens your canopy; and sent down rain from the heavens; and brought forth therewith Fruits for your sustenance; then set not up rivals unto Allah when ye know (the truth).

Allathee jaAAala lakumu al-ardafirashan waalssamaa binaan waanzalamina alssama-i maan faakhraja bihi mina alththamaratirizqan lakum fala tajAAaloo lillahi andadanwaantum taAAlamoona

2:23

And if ye are in doubt as to what We have revealed from time to time to Our servant, then produce a Sura like thereunto; and call your witnesses or helpers (If there are any) besides Allah, if your (doubts) are true.

Wa-in kuntum fee raybin mimma nazzalnaAAala AAabdina fa/too bisooratin min mithlihi waodAAooshuhadaakum min dooni Allahi in kuntum sadiqeena

2:24

But if ye cannot- and of a surety ye cannot- then fear the Fire whose fuel is men and stones,- which is prepared for those who reject Faith.

Fa-in lam tafAAaloo walan tafAAaloo faittaqooalnnara allatee waqooduha alnnasuwaalhijaratu oAAiddat lilkafireena

2:25

But give glad tidings to those who believe and work righteousness, that their portion is Gardens, beneath which rivers flow. Every time they are fed with fruits therefrom, they say: "Why, this is what we were fed with before," for they are given things in similitude; and they have therein companions pure (and holy); and they abide therein (for ever).

Wabashshiri allatheena amanoowaAAamiloo alssalihati anna lahum jannatintajree min tahtiha al-anharu kullamaruziqoo minha min thamaratin rizqan qaloo hathaallathee ruziqna min qablu waotoo bihi mutashabihanwalahum feeha azwajun mutahharatun wahumfeeha khalidoona

2:26

Allah disdains not to use the similitude of things, lowest as well as highest. Those who believe know that it is truth from their Lord; but those who reject Faith say: "What means Allah by this similitude?" By it He causes many to stray, and many He leads into the right path; but He causes not to stray, except those who forsake (the path),-

Inna Allaha la yastahyeean yadriba mathalan ma baAAoodatan famafawqaha faamma allatheena amanoofayaAAlamoona annahu alhaqqu min rabbihim waammaallatheena kafaroo fayaqooloona matha aradaAllahu bihatha mathalan yudillu bihikatheeran wayahdee bihi katheeran wama yudillu bihiilla alfasiqeena

2:27

Those who break Allah's Covenant after it is ratified, and who sunder what Allah Has ordered to be joined, and do mischief on earth: These cause loss (only) to themselves.

Allatheena yanqudoona AAahdaAllahi min baAAdi meethaqihi wayaqtaAAoona maamara Allahu bihi an yoosala wayufsidoona fee al-ardiola-ika humu alkhasiroona

2:28

How can ye reject the faith in Allah?- seeing that ye were without life, and He gave you life; then will He cause you to die, and will again bring you to life; and again to Him will ye return.

Kayfa takfuroona biAllahiwakuntum amwatan faahyakum thumma yumeetukumthumma yuhyeekum thumma ilayhi turjaAAoona

2:29

It is He Who hath created for you all things that are on earth; Moreover His design comprehended the heavens, for He gave order and perfection to the seven firmaments; and of all things He hath perfect knowledge.

Huwa allathee khalaqa lakum mafee al-ardi jameeAAan thumma istawa ila alssama-ifasawwahunna sabAAa samawatin wahuwa bikullishay-in AAaleemun

2:30

Behold, thy Lord said to the angels: "I will create a vicegerent on earth." They said: "Wilt Thou place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood?- whilst we do celebrate Thy praises and glorify Thy holy (name)?" He said: "I know what ye know not."

Wa-ith qala rabbuka lilmala-ikatiinnee jaAAilun fee al-ardi khaleefatan qalooatajAAalu feeha man yufsidu feeha wayasfiku alddimaawanahnu nusabbihu bihamdika wanuqaddisu lakaqala innee aAAlamu ma la taAAlamoona

Allah’s Names

Bukhari: Volume 9, Book 93, Number 489: Narrated Abu Huraira:   Allah's Apostle said, "Allah has ninety-nine Names, one-hundred less one; and he who memorized them all by heart will enter Paradise." To count something means to know it by heart.

Allah, the Exalted, ordered that He should be remembered a lot. Describing the wise men and women who ponder His signs, the Qur'an mentions, "those who remember Allah standing, sitting and on their sides,'' Qur'an 3.191 and "those men and women who engage much in Allah's praise. For them has Allah prepared forgiveness and a great reward.'' Qur'an 33.35 Mujahid explained, "A person cannot be one of 'those men and women who remember Allah much' as mentioned in the above verse of the Qur'an, unless he or she remembers Allah at all times, standing, sitting, or lying in bed."

Say: "Invoke God, or invoke the Most Gracious: by whichever name you invoke Him, He is always the One -- for His are all the attributes of perfection."  Al Isra 17:110

Al Barr

He is the One and Only Deity, the One Who is Worshipped and the One Who deserves to be worshipped by the whole of His creation due to the Perfect Godly Attributes that He is described with.

Allah! There is none worthy of worship but He. (2:255)

Al-Wakeel

The One Who has the responsibility to dispose the affairs of the creation in accordance with His Knowledge, perfect Power and all-encompassing Wisdom. The One who looks after His friends and makes the good easy for them, preserves them from the evil and suffices for them in all of their affairs. Therefore the one who takes Him as One to be relied upon, He suffices him.

"Such is Allah your Lord! None has the right to be worshipped but He, the Creator of all things. So worship Him Alone, and He is the Disposer of all affairs." (6:102)

"And put your trust in Allah, and Allah is Sufficient as a Disposer of Affairs." (39:62)

Ya-Hayyu

The Ever Living One;

God -- there is no deity save Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsistent Fount of All Being!
(Al-Imran 3:1)

Ya-Qayyuum

The Sustainer; The Self-Existing;

God -- there is no deity save Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsistent Fount of all Being!
(Al 'Imran 3:2)

An-Noor

The Light of the heavens and the earth, the One Who illuminates the hearts with knowledge of Him, faith in Him and His guidance. He is the One Who has lighted the heavens and the earth with lights that He has placed therein. His veil is light and were He to uncover it then the Face of the Glorious would burn everything from the creation that His Sight fell upon.

Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. (24:35)

Al-Jabbar

The Compeller;

And they prayed to God that the truth be made to triumph.(Ibrahim 14:15)

Al-Jabbar; 3K

Ya-Halim

The Forebearing;

A kind word and the veiling of another's want
is better than a charitable deed followed by hurt;  and God is self-sufficient, forbearing.
(Al-Baqarah 2:263)

Al-Halim; 3K
